Swim Team Audition

Swim Team Audition

My kids are constantly scolding me for calling tryouts “auditions” and practice “rehearsal”. Well I’m a musician … makes perfect sense to me! How well I remember my girls’ “auditions”! Sophia was 5 years old and going onto a small, barely competitive team. She had to swim down and back (50 yards). She swam down and back and then did the workout. It was just easy for her.

The day came for her “audition” and she was a mess.

Tess, at age 7, had gone through group swim lessons and private swim lessons. In the end we asked Sophia’s coach at the time if she would give her some private lessons to get her ready to try out for the team. She did and quickly said Tess was ready. The day came for her “audition” and she was a mess. While she was waiting for her turn, she was sitting on a bench. One of the coaches asked, “What is wrong with Tess?” I said, “She is trying out for the team and she is super nervous. She is alternating between praying, crying and wanting to throw up … not necessarily in that order.” The coach said, “I LOVE IT!!  GO TESS!!!”

When the head age group coach called her … she tried to pass out while she got in the pool and did great. The coach looked at me and said, “What was the problem?  She’s great!” She made it onto the team. Then she had to START the team, so the nerves were back. Then the first swim meet (when I honestly thought she was going to hurl into the pool) … etc. Tess struggles with firsts.

Then there are people who struggle with firsts … and it takes real courage to conquer their fears.

There are those people who seem to naturally have confidence. When Sophia did her first swim meet with starting blocks (which we didn’t have at our pool, so she’d never seen one) her coach told her she could just go in from the side.  Well she was having none of that. She got up on the block and went off. Then there are people who struggle with firsts … and it takes real courage to conquer their fears. Swimming is an excellent opportunity to build confidence and help overcome fears.

So much more is gained from swimming than just good starts, flip turns, fast times and achievement. Some achievement goes far deeper and will carry through all of life.
